Halitosis, or chronic bad breath, is a common problem, but it isn’t something you have to just grin and bear. It is a condition that is both preventable and treatable, and can be addressed by your dentist. Signature Smiles’s knowledgeable dentists are experienced in diagnosing bad breath’s causes and treating halitosis.
Your dentist must first diagnose the cause of your bad breath before determining treatment. Poor oral hygiene may cause halitosis as food particles that remain in your mouth can attract bacteria and promote bacterial growth. Improperly cleaned dentures also have a similar effect. These may only require dental cleaning and an antibacterial mouthwash to remedy, along with proper oral health care.
However, gum disease and oral yeast infections can also cause halitosis, in which case your dentist will recommend treatments, and the bad breath will likely go away when the infection is eradicated. The same goes for other diseases that can cause halitosis, such as pneumonia, acid reflux disease, and diabetes. Xerostomia, or dry mouth, may also be the culprit behind your halitosis diagnosis. If this is the case, your dentist may recommend the use of artificial saliva.
